In 2018 we were granted an exciting opportunity to work on our first big corporate project, at the same time unlocking a new and upcoming market in Kenya.
CGTN (China Global Television Network) is a Chinese international English-language news channel of the state-owned China Global Television Network group, which is part of Beijing-based China Central Television (CCTV).
CGTN Africa headquarters are based in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2018 they started expanding there studios and offices. The objective was to find a design firm that understands Chinese culture, western culture and East African culture at the same time, and is ready to oversee the construction in Nairobi. As a result, we were selected to undertake this project.
The main challenge of the design stage was to cater to team members of different backgrounds and cultures. The design direction is very minimalist and westernized, although contains some elements that cater to the Chinese taste (like stainless steel frames on the walls, the style of casual furniture) as well as some elements that cater to the Kenyan taste (the classic Swahili log ceilings are reused here in more modern way, kitenge reminding tiles are used as back-splash in the pantry and washrooms).
